About
During my childhood in the wild urban surroundings of Queens, NY I was always looking for nature. Hunting for toads, befriending animals, and talking to trees were pastimes I shared with friends. Even as a child, this environment seemed mediated and compromised by human intervention – including my own. Often in my work I explore the complicated relationships people have with the natural world. My photographs are often quiet comments on the disquieting evidence of how humans are playing with our planet.
At the same time I am an observer of phenomena, constantly distracted by clouds and flowers, old photographs and new ones I am compelled to make. I thrive on chance encounters and inspirations but I also revisit ideas over time. Why do we celebrate things the way we do? What actions and choices are guided by tradition, and where does personal choice or circumstance come into play? Why are traditions and traditional objects important, and how do they evolve?
My photographic archive includes images made with plastic and traditional film cameras, pinholes, alternative processes, lensless forms of image making, and a variety of digital photography tools that I use as I move through the world.
I am a photographer, bookmaker and educator. I make my home in Rhode Island where I teach photography and digital art. I have a BA in Art from Union College and an MFA in Visual Studies from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY.
